Pinellas County Commission Chair Urges Tampa Bay Rays to Clarify Stadium Agreement

Pinellas County Commission Chairperson Kathleen Peters recently sent a letter to the Tampa Bay Rays, requesting clarity on their intentions regarding a proposed new ballpark in the area. The letter comes amidst growing tension between the local government and the team over the stadium project.

In the letter, Peters asks the Rays to provide a notice of termination by a specified deadline if they are not committed to moving forward with the agreement. Team owner Stuart Sternberg expressed concerns about delays in funding approval, indicating a strained partnership with the county. The Rays’ presidents, Brian Auld and Matt Silverman, offered to explore alternative solutions with willing partners due to the delays impacting the timeline for the new stadium.

Peters emphasized the county’s commitment to the stadium deal and underscored the importance of clear communication from the Rays about their intentions. In response, Auld stated the team’s eagerness to collaborate on a long-term solution to keep Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay.

The proposed $1.3 billion stadium would feature a capacity of 30,000 for baseball games, a sloped roof similar to the current Tropicana Stadium, and a revitalized Gas Plant district with residential units, hotel rooms, office space, retail outlets, and cultural venues. However, a recent vote by the County Commission delayed the decision on public funding, while the St. Petersburg City Council reversed a previous decision to allocate funds for repairs to the Tropicana Field roof.

Amidst the uncertainties, the Rays have hinted at potential relocation, with Auld indicating that there is no longer a viable deal on the table. The future of the team in St. Petersburg and beyond remains uncertain.

Overall, the situation highlights the complex negotiations between the Rays, local government, and community stakeholders as they navigate the path towards a new stadium and the preservation of Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay.
