Red Sox announce a bunch of roster moves before Tuesday’s game

The Boston Red Sox are gearing up to face the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park on Tuesday night, but not without some roster changes beforehand.

In a recent announcement, Boston revealed that they have brought infielder/outfielder Jamie Westbrook back up from Triple-A and added right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter to the active roster.

Westbrook, who made his MLB debut earlier this year, had a .222 batting average with a .749 OPS, one home run, and four RBIs in 11 games with the Red Sox.

On the other hand, Wingenter was acquired in a trade with the Detroit Tigers for Triple-A pitcher CJ Weins. While he has only played for Triple-A Toledo this season, Wingenter has managed a 3.31 ERA and a 1.469 WHIP in 26 games.

To accommodate these new additions, Boston has designated right-handed pitcher Naoyuki Uwasawa for assignment and sent infielder Enmanuel Valdez down to Triple-A Worcester.

Uwasawa, who appeared in two games for the Red Sox this year, struggled in Triple-A with a 6.54 ERA and a 1.641 WHIP over 13 appearances. Meanwhile, Valdez has maintained a .226 batting average with a .684 OPS in 56 games this season, but the team may be seeking additional support against upcoming left-handed pitchers.
