Red Sox move James Paxton to 60-day IL in trio of roster moves

The Boston Red Sox have been dealing with a string of injuries to their pitching staff this season, and unfortunately, it continued last week when left-handed starter James Paxton suffered a partial tear of his right calf in a game against the Houston Astros.

As a result, Boston made the decision to move Paxton to the 60-day injured list, creating an opening on the 40-man roster. To fill this void, the Red Sox selected left-handed reliever Joely Rodriguez from Triple-A Worcester. Rodriguez will be joining the major league team, with right-handed reliever Greg Weissert being optioned back.

Rodriguez, 32, had a rough start to the season with Boston, posting a 6.55 ERA (5.26 FIP) and a 1.545 WHIP in 11 appearances before being designated for assignment. However, he has found success with Worcester, recording a 1.88 ERA and a 1.116 WHIP while striking out 13 batters in 14 1/3 innings.

Weissert, 29, has been shuffling between the MLB and Triple-A levels throughout the year. He has put up a 4.10 ERA (4.14 FIP) and a 1.448 WHIP in 48 1/3 innings for Boston this season. During his most recent outings, he allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two in 1/3 innings against the Astros.
