Following a day of rest, the Boston Red Sox hosted the San Diego Padres at Fenway Park in the first of a three-game series on Friday. Unfortunately, Alex Cora’s team suffered a disappointing 9-2 defeat.
The Red Sox’s pitching performance was subpar in this matchup. Nick Pivetta struggled on the mound, surrendering five runs on seven hits and a walk in just four innings. He was pulled from the game in the fifth inning after allowing five consecutive batters to reach base.
Greg Weissert took over pitching duties but couldn’t stop the bleeding, giving up hits to the next four batters and allowing four runs to score.
Chase Anderson provided some relief in the final four innings, only conceding one hit and two walks.
The offense also had a tough time generating runs. Despite only striking out six times, the Red Sox couldn’t capitalize on scoring opportunities. Their only runs came from a Connor Wong single and a Rafael Devers solo home run.
With this loss, Boston’s record now stands at 43-38 for the season and 19-22 at Fenway Park. The two teams are set to face off again on Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET.
