The MLB season can be a grueling one for relief pitchers, who often pitch in upwards of 70 games a year.
The Boston Red Sox’s bullpen has had its ups and downs this season, with some impressive streaks and some rough patches.
One way the group breaks up the monotony of a 162-game season is by celebrating each game with a toast.
This tradition, which has been going on for a few years, was recently discussed by members of the bullpen and bullpen coach Kevin Walker in a video on the team’s YouTube channel.
“The bullpen toast started about three years ago and has evolved organically,” Walker explained. “It’s a chance for everyone to come together before the game, remind each other of their importance to the team’s success, and encourage each other to do their best.”
“When we win, the person who led the toast gets to keep it, hoping to hold onto it for a while. If we lose, they pass it on to someone else for their own version of the toast,” Walker added.
Newcomer Lucas Sims quickly embraced the tradition, saying, “After a few days, I realized it was part of the routine, and I started to enjoy it.”
Josh Winckowski, who has moved between the rotation and bullpen, fondly recalled a streak of nine or ten consecutive toasts in 2023.
“Since joining the bullpen, I’ve really enjoyed being a part of it. It’s a great group of guys, and a lot of fun,” Winckowski said.
Walker emphasized that the toast serves as a reminder to focus on the task at hand and execute to the best of their abilities.
Boston’s bullpen is currently riding high after two strong, scoreless outings, setting the stage for a spirited toast in the upcoming series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Fenway Park.
