The Cincinnati Reds have made the decision to part ways with manager David Bell, ending his six-year tenure with the team. Bell, who was under contract until 2026, will be replaced by interim manager Freddie Benavides for the remainder of the season.
Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall expressed the need for a change in leadership to propel the team forward after a period of underwhelming performance. The decision comes as the Reds currently hold a 76-81 record and sit in fourth place in the National League Central division.
Bell’s time with the Reds saw mixed results, including a playoff appearance in 2020 but followed by a disappointing 2022 season. Despite showing promise in 2023, the team’s performance in 2024 fell short of expectations, leading to Bell’s dismissal. His departure marks the end of his tenure as the 62nd manager in Reds franchise history.
Bell joins Pedro Grifol of the White Sox and Scott Servais of the Mariners as the third manager to be fired during the 2024 season. In the meantime, Benavides, a former Reds player drafted in 1987, will take over the managerial duties.
