Report: Brandon Aiyuk is coming to terms that he’ll play on his fifth-year option in 2024

The focus of the offseason for the San Francisco 49ers has been on negotiating a contract extension for Brandon Aiyuk, a situation that presents its own set of challenges. Historically, the Niners have not let players play out the final year of their contract, so it is expected that a deal will be reached this summer.

However, the 49ers currently have a significant portion of their salary cap tied up in key players like Trent Williams, Deebo Samuel, Charvarius Ward, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, and George Kittle. This leaves limited room for Aiyuk’s extension, leading to speculation that his reward may be delayed until 2025, impacting the team’s financial planning.

Could the unconventional strategy for Aiyuk’s extension involve deferring his compensation to a later year? This approach could have long-term implications for the team’s financial stability.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano discussed the offseason rumors, expressing doubt that a star receiver, including Aiyuk, would be traded before the season begins. Graziano suggested that the Niners may prioritize retaining Aiyuk over Samuel due to contract considerations.

“The Niners, meanwhile, seem to have a dialogue going with Aiyuk, and some of his recent public comments indicate that he has begun to make peace with the idea of playing for San Francisco on his current contract this season if no new deal materializes. Teammate Deebo Samuel’s guaranteed money runs out after this season, so there’s the strong chance the Niners instead move on from Samuel and find themselves able to pay Aiyuk in 2025.”

Aiyuk’s contract situation is unique due to the team’s cap constraints and the potential reshuffling of the receiving corps. His cap number for this year is $14.12 million, reflecting the standard fifth-year option for a first-round draft pick.

While Aiyuk may have to wait for his reward, the possibility of additional funds becoming available in 2025 could work in his favor. The uncertainty surrounding his contract adds a layer of complexity, especially considering the financial commitments to other star players on the team.

Ultimately, Aiyuk’s patience and willingness to trust the process will play a crucial role in his contract negotiations. The dynamic nature of the situation highlights the importance of long-term planning and strategic decision-making for both the player and the team.
