After making racist comments about Son Heung-min, Rodrigo Bentancur has been fined £100,000 and handed a seven-match suspension by the Football Association.
The Uruguay international faced charges from the FA for remarks he made about his club captain back in June.
During a television interview in Uruguay, Bentancur said “they all look the same” when asked about Son and his cousin, leading to his suspension. The FA confirmed the ban citing a breach of FA Rule E3.1 for acting in an improper manner and using abusive words.
In an official statement, the FA stated: “An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview.”
Bentancur denied the charges, but the Commission found him guilty of an aggravated breach under FA Rule E3.2 due to the nature of his comments.
The statement further added: “Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent Regulatory Commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing.”
In response, Son stated: “I’ve spoken with Lolo [Bentancur]. He made a mistake, he knows this and has apologised.
“Lolo would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all.
“We’re past this, we’re united and we will be back together in pre-season to fight for our club as one.”
Bentancur’s domestic ban extends until Boxing Day, causing him to miss several key matches including games against Manchester City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Southampton, and Liverpool, as well as the Carabao Cup quarter-final with Manchester United.
However, he will still be eligible to play in Europa League fixtures against Roma and Rangers as the suspension only applies to domestic games.
