The golf world seems to have exhausted itself discussing the sport’s Great Divide between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Without progress towards reconciliation from the Powers that Be, there’s little left to say. Justin Thomas even mentioned feeling past the point of exhaustion regarding the split.
Rory McIlroy, however, is looking ahead and focusing on the international aspect of LIV Golf’s strategy. While McIlroy has criticized LIV in the past, he recognizes the appeal of their global approach.
“For golf to remain relevant, it needs to have a year-round worldwide calendar,” McIlroy stated before The Players Championship. He emphasized that golf is not exclusive to America and should have a global presence.
While acknowledging that American corporations drive golf’s revenue, McIlroy sees potential in hosting major tournaments outside the U.S. He highlighted the success of events in Australia and the growing interest in golf in China and the Middle East.
McIlroy stressed the importance of reuniting the best players from both tours for more frequent competition. He suggested having top players compete together at least once a month to enhance the sport’s appeal.
On a lighter note, McIlroy shared his thoughts on various topics, including the rise of YouTube golf and Tiger Woods’ unfortunate injury. He confirmed his commitment to playing on the professional circuit and expressed hope for Woods’ return to the game.
McIlroy is set to compete at Sawgrass this weekend, teeing off with Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler on Thursday at 1:29 p.m. ET.
