Incoming Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim reveals that he was given an ultimatum to take over the position sooner rather than later. Originally wanting to succeed Erik ten Hag at the end of the season, Amorim was appointed as United’s new boss on Friday with a contract until 2027. He will officially begin his tenure on 11 November, before the last international break of the year.
United acted swiftly following the dismissal of Ten Hag after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United, currently placing them 14th in the Premier League table. The club will pay €10m in compensation to Amorim’s current club, Sporting CP.
Amorim, speaking after Sporting’s victory over Estrela, expressed his initial desire to delay the move to United but was informed that it was not an option. “Manchester United came in with an offer above the compensation clause, and the president had to protect the club’s interests,” he stated.
Reflecting on the situation, Amorim said, “It was now or never, or Manchester would have pursued another option. I had to make a decision within three days that significantly changes my life.”

Despite interest from Liverpool and West Ham United, Amorim chose United as the next step in his coaching career. “I’ve had other opportunities, but after Sporting, I wanted Manchester because it allows me to implement my vision,” he explained.
“There comes a time when I need to progress in my career. It was a tough decision, but I believe it was the right one for my future.”
