Luis Rubiales claimed that Spanish footballer Jenni Hermoso willingly accepted the kiss he gave her following the Women’s World Cup final in 2023.
Currently facing trial for alleged sexual assault and coercion, the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) defended himself by stating that he was certain Hermoso had agreed to the kiss, describing it as a “spontaneous” moment.
The incident, which occurred during the medal ceremony after Spain’s victory in the World Cup, led to widespread backlash and calls for Rubiales’ resignation. Despite the controversy, he maintains his innocence.
During his testimony, Rubiales recounted the events, stating that Hermoso had embraced him tightly and then gave him permission to kiss her. He clarified that he had asked for “a little kiss.”
When questioned about his knowledge of sexual harassment regulations, Rubiales confirmed his awareness of such policies.
On the other hand, Hermoso has consistently denied consenting to the kiss, asserting that the incident marred what should have been a joyful occasion.
While admitting his error in judgment and acknowledging the inappropriateness of his actions, Rubiales maintained that no criminal offense had been committed. Prosecutors, however, are seeking a prison sentence of two and a half years for him.
