Scottie Scheffler runs away with The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, matches PGA Tour scoring record in historic win

If there was ever a place for Scottie Scheffler to dominate a tournament and secure his first win of the season, it’s at TPC Craig Ranch.

The world’s top-ranked golfer showcased his skills this week at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, his hometown event, where he clinched his first victory of 2025. Scheffler entered the final round with a remarkable eight-shot lead and finished the week at 31-under after a stellar final-round 63 on Sunday, securing an eight-shot win in McKinney, Texas.

“This tournament holds a special place in my heart,” Scheffler shared emotionally on CBS, holding his son. “It all started for me as a pro 11 years ago, with my sister as my caddie… It feels like a culmination of a lifetime of hard work and sacrifices for moments like these. They are truly special.”

Scheffler, who made his PGA Tour debut at the Byron Nelson as a 17-year-old amateur in 2014, became the first golfer from a Dallas-area high school to win the tournament since 2007. He is also just the third player to lead wire-to-wire at the event, following Tom Watson’s feat in 1980. Notably, Scheffler’s margin of victory is the largest in the tournament’s history.

His impressive performance began with a scorching 10-under 61 in the opening round, where he closed with back-to-back birdies and posted a remarkable 29 on the front nine. He continued his stellar play with an 8-under 63 on Friday, establishing a record six-shot lead at the halfway mark. Despite a slight slowdown in the latter half of the event, Scheffler maintained his lead, culminating in an eight-shot victory.

On Sunday, Scheffler sealed the win effortlessly, extending his lead to a staggering 10 shots at one point after an eagle at the par-5 ninth hole. He finished with a 62, making three more birdies but missing the chance to break the Tour’s all-time scoring record by a hair’s breadth.

Erik van Rooyen secured second place at 23-under, while Sam Stevens and Jordan Spieth finished in third and fourth, respectively. Spieth, impressed by Scheffler’s performance, acknowledged the inspiration he drew from the champion’s play.

“What he’s been doing is inspiring. It wasn’t long ago that I was ahead of him, and now I’m not. I watched his game in those first two rounds, and I realized I need to step up. It’s very inspiring,” Spieth remarked.

Scheffler’s victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson adds to his impressive record, which includes seven wins last season, including major titles. Despite a delayed start to the season due to a hand procedure, Scheffler has consistently performed well, making every cut in nine starts with multiple top-10 finishes.

After a brief hiatus from the winner’s circle, Scheffler’s triumph at TPC Craig Ranch marks his 14th career Tour win, solidifying his status as one of golf’s elite players.
