Shaquil Barrett retires: Dolphins may not need to make any moves

The 2024 training camp for the Miami Dolphins kicked off last week as the rookie class reported to South Florida. The veterans are set to return to the team training facilities on Tuesday, marking the beginning of the team coming together and preparing for the upcoming regular season in September. However, the Dolphins are now facing an unexpected gap in their roster.

Shaquil Barrett, the outside linebacker who signed with Miami in March on a one-year contract, shocked everyone with his retirement announcement on Saturday. This decision marked the end of his nine-year career, including a four-month stint with the Dolphins. Barrett began his career with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2014 before moving to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019, where he earned two Pro Bowl selections. The Dolphins had brought Barrett on board this year to bolster their edge-rushing depth, potentially stepping into a starting role if needed due to injuries to other outside linebackers.

Following Barrett’s unexpected retirement, speculation has arisen about finding a replacement through free agency. The question now is how the Dolphins will fill the void left by a player expected to play a significant role this season.

Do the Dolphins need to make a move, or can they rely on their current roster for edge rushers?

The Dolphins might already have the necessary edge rushers in their lineup. Jaelan Phillips, recovering from an Achilles tendon tear, could be ready for the season opener, though the team may opt for a cautious approach to prevent any re-injury. Bradley Chubb, who tore his ACL in December, is likely to start the season on the physically unable-to-perform list, keeping him out of action early on.

The Dolphins could turn to their rookies, including top draft pick Chop Robinson, fifth-round selection Mohamed Kamara, and undrafted free agent Grayson Murphy, to step up in the absence of the veterans. The coaching staff may look to these rookies to step in and make an impact until the return of Chubb and Phillips.

Could the rookies be the solution to the gap left by Barrett’s retirement?

In an ideal scenario, both Phillips and Chubb would be ready for the start of the 2024 season, allowing the rookies time to develop. However, with both players currently on the unable-to-perform list, there is added pressure on the rookies to adapt quickly and contribute to the team.

Despite the uncertainties, the rookies have shown promise. Chop Robinson’s speed and agility, along with the determination of Kamara and Murphy, could prove invaluable to the Dolphins as they navigate through the season.

The challenge lies ahead for these young players, but their potential impact should not be underestimated.

What are your thoughts on the Miami Dolphins’ EDGE position? Do you believe Jaelan Phillips will be ready for week one? Which internal player do you think will step up after Shaq Barrett’s retirement? Share your opinions in the comments below!
