Renowned Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has proven to be a game-changer for the Indian cricket team on numerous occasions. His exceptional performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 showcased his ability to rescue his team from challenging situations and secure victories.
In a recent statement, the 30-year-old emphasized the importance of considering bowlers as potential captaincy options, referring to them as the ‘smart ones.’ Bumrah highlighted legendary captains like Kapil Dev from India and Imran Khan from Pakistan, who led their teams to World Cup victories.
However, former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali disagreed with Bumrah’s perspective on the two iconic captains, suggesting that Bumrah should concentrate on his bowling skills rather than aspiring for captaincy.
Insights from Basit Ali on Jasprit Bumrah
During a discussion on his YouTube channel, Basit Ali pointed out that both Kapil Dev and Imran Khan had established themselves as exceptional all-rounders before taking on leadership roles. He emphasized that successful captains like Dev and Khan had evolved into all-rounders before assuming captaincy responsibilities.
Regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s interest in captaincy, it’s akin to Babar Azam’s inclination towards leadership. In my view, Bumrah should prioritize his bowling prowess over captaincy ambitions. He referenced Kapil Dev and Imran Khan as captaincy examples, but they had transitioned into all-rounders before leading their teams.
Bumrah briefly captained the Indian Test team during a match against England in 2021. Despite his leadership stint, India faced a defeat, leading to a drawn series.
Basit Ali suggested that Bumrah might have a chance to lead the white-ball side post the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan in February 2025.
A notable bowler-captain example is Australia’s Pat Cummins, who guided Australia to victory in the World Championship and the ODI World Cup 2023. Interestingly, Cummins’ team defeated India in both finals.
