Should we believe in the Cubs, Giants, Blue Jays, Tigers and Rangers?

After four weeks into the MLB season, it’s still too early to draw definitive conclusions about the hot starts and slumps of teams. However, we can assess some early contenders and their potential for sustained success in 2025. Let’s take a look at five teams that have started strong and debate their long-term prospects.

Chicago Cubs (16-10, 1st in NL Central)

Do I believe in the Cubs? I think so. Their unconventional style of play, with high-scoring games and a leaky bullpen, has them leading the NL Central. While the bullpen has struggled, the lineup has been dominant, led by Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong. The starting rotation has held its own, despite losing Justin Steele for the season. Overall, the Cubs have the potential to be a competitive team this year.

San Francisco Giants (16-9, 2nd in NL West)

The Giants have surprised with their strong start, led by Jung Hoo Lee and Matt Chapman. While their bullpen has excelled, the rotation has been a bit shaky. The lineup lacks depth beyond a few key players, and the farm system may not provide immediate reinforcements. The Giants could remain in the wild-card race, but staying competitive in their tough division will be a challenge.

Toronto Blue Jays (12-13, 3rd in AL East)

The Blue Jays have shown promise, especially with the extension of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the improved bullpen. However, the lineup lacks power beyond a few stars, and the rotation is thin. With key players like Willy Adames struggling, the Blue Jays may struggle to compete in a tough AL East division.

Detroit Tigers (15-10, 1st in AL Central)

The Tigers have been impressive, with a strong rotation led by Tarik Skubal and a breakout performance from Spencer Torkelson. Manager AJ Hinch has guided the team well, and the pitching development system is producing results. With a solid lineup and pitching staff, the Tigers could be a force in the AL Central.

Texas Rangers (14-10, 1st in AL West)

The Rangers have underperformed offensively, despite having a talented lineup. The pitching staff has been a bright spot, with standout performances from Nathan Eovaldi and Tyler Mahle. However, questions remain about the team’s durability and consistency. While there is potential for improvement, the Rangers may face challenges in a competitive AL West.

Overall, these teams have shown early promise, but their long-term success will depend on various factors such as lineup depth, pitching consistency, and divisional competition. It will be interesting to see how they fare as the season progresses.
