Southampton swoop for Chile striker Brereton Díaz

Southampton has strengthened their attacking options ahead of their Premier League return by securing the services of Chile international Ben Brereton Díaz from Villarreal.

The 25-year-old, who hails from Stoke and is eligible to represent Chile through his mother, has signed a four-year contract at St Mary’s for a reported fee of around £7 million.

Brereton Díaz rose through the ranks at Nottingham Forest but made a name for himself at Blackburn Rovers, where he netted 47 goals in 177 appearances alongside current Saints forward Adam Armstrong. His impressive form, with 38 goals in his last two seasons at Ewood Park, earned him a move to Villarreal last summer.

Although he struggled for playing time in La Liga, a loan spell at Premier League side Sheffield United in January proved to be fruitful as he notched six goals in 14 top-flight matches.

What Brereton Díaz Said

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brereton Díaz expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m absolutely thrilled. The past few days have been smooth, and I’m delighted to have everything sorted and signed. I can’t wait to meet everyone; it’s fantastic to be a part of this esteemed club.

“As a youngster, I watched the club when they were in the Premier League. Despite their relegation last season, they bounced back up as a united team. The manager and everything else just clicked, and I believe it’s an incredible club. I am eager to get started.”

Manager’s Delight

Saints manager Russell Martin expressed his satisfaction with the new acquisition, stating, “I am thrilled to welcome Ben to the team. He is a versatile and intelligent player, capable of operating in various positions in the attacking line.

“He possesses strength, power, and a keen eye for goal, with a commendable scoring record, including his successful stint in the Premier League last season where he adapted swiftly to the level.

“He is a true team player and embodies the hard-working, hungry mentality we desire in our squad. His athleticism and physicality make him a perfect fit for the Premier League, and we believe he will enhance our attacking options.”

Brereton Díaz was Southampton’s second signing of the day, following the earlier arrival of Japanese midfielder Kuryu Matsuki from FC Tokyo, who will spend the upcoming season on loan at Goztepe in Turkey.
