The Pittsburgh Steelers made a savvy move by signing quarterback Russell Wilson for a bargain price during free agency in March.
While Wilson is earning a hefty $80 million over two seasons with the Denver Broncos, he is set to make just over $1.2 million from the Steelers in 2024.
Despite the Steelers landing a top-tier quarterback at a great value, Pro Football Network has surprisingly labeled the Super Bowl champion as a potential training camp cut candidate.
This decision seems illogical for Pittsburgh. Although Wilson may not be at his peak performance like his days in Seattle when he was throwing 40 touchdowns a season, he still ranks among the top 32 quarterbacks in the league, a significant upgrade for the Steelers post-Ben Roethlisberger era.
Even if Justin Fields shines and claims the starting role, releasing Wilson wouldn’t be the wisest move. In the worst-case scenario, Wilson would serve as the best backup in the NFL in case of an injury to Fields. However, it is more likely that Wilson will begin the season as the starter, solidifying his position as the team’s leader. The chances of the Steelers cutting Wilson are close to none, especially before the season kicks off.
