Former New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason was honored with the prestigious Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2024 ESPY Awards in Los Angeles. “Receiving the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage is a great honor for me. Courage, to me, means facing fear and adversity with an open heart and humility. This award is not just for me, but for all those living with disabilities, illnesses, or fear.”
Gleason reflected on his own journey with ALS, stating, “I was given 3 years to live, and fear has been a constant companion. But through this award, I hope to inspire others to find courage in the face of adversity.”
He emphasized the importance of sharing vulnerabilities and supporting each other, stating, “Our ability to courageously share our vulnerabilities is our greatest strength. Together, we can overcome any challenge.”
Gleason concluded his speech by calling for compassion and collaboration in facing the challenges of the 21st century. He received a standing ovation, expressing his gratitude and love for the support he has received.
