Atlanta Drive Golf Club is set to face off against New York Golf Club in the inaugural TGL championship after Atlanta secured a 9-3 victory over The Bay Golf Club at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on Tuesday night.
Interestingly, neither of the top two teams in the SoFi Cup standings for the regular season will be competing for the championship title.
Atlanta, comprised of Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, and Billy Horschel, clinched the third spot behind The Bay GC, consisting of Shane Lowry, Min Woo Lee, and Ludvig Åberg. However, following their victory on Tuesday, Atlanta will now face off against New York GC, who secured their spot in the TGL final by defeating top finisher Los Angeles GC with a score of 6-3 on Monday.
During the triples round, Atlanta took a commanding 4-2 lead, with The Bay struggling with their putting. Lee managed to sink a putt on the 14th hole, but it was too late as Atlanta had already secured the match.
In the singles round, Cantlay made an impressive tee shot landing less than four feet from the cup, ultimately securing three points for Atlanta with a successful putt on his second shot.
Prior to completing the final three holes, Atlanta had already secured their spot in the TGL final. The Bay GC had the opportunity to claim third place by winning all three holes, but the teams ended up tying on the 15th hole after Cantlay made a crucial putt.
The first match of the SoFi Cup finals is scheduled to start next Monday at 9 p.m. ET, followed by the second match on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET. If necessary, a third match will be played immediately after Match 2 at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
The champion of TGL and winner of the SoFi Cup will be awarded $9 million, while the runner-up will receive $4.5 million.
