The truths behind José Aldo’s weight-cut revelation, and why it signals the clear end of his decorated career

Have you watched the viral video of a young José Aldo shopping for his first suit? If you’re a part of the MMA community, chances are you have. This heartwarming video has been widely shared due to its wholesome content, a rarity in this sport.

What made the video so endearing was Aldo’s youthful enthusiasm. Despite already being a champion at that time, he appeared genuinely delighted as he tried on sport coats and hats, all while still wearing his fight shorts below the waist.

He may have been in his mid-twenties, but in that moment, he seemed much younger. Just a kid, marveling at everything around him. It brings to mind a scene from “Hud” where Paul Newman reflects on his younger days, reminiscing about a time when he “hadn’t had enough of nothing.”

Fast forward to now, and it seems that perhaps Aldo has indeed had enough. The man who recently lost a unanimous decision at UFC 315 is now about 15 years older than the young man in that video. However, it’s not just the passage of time that has changed him; it’s the experiences, the wear and tear on his body, and the highs and lows of his career that have shaped him.

Aldo shared a poignant post on social media the day after his loss, where he revealed his contemplation of retirement. Despite his dreams of reclaiming a UFC championship at 38, he had a realization while cutting weight for the fight.

“But while cutting weight, something inside me said: ‘You don’t need to do this anymore.’ And I listened,” he wrote.

Within his brief statement lies some profound truths about the sport of MMA. It’s telling that his moment of clarity came during the grueling process of weight cutting, a time when fighters often confront their innermost thoughts and fears. It’s a period of immense physical and mental strain, where one’s dedication and desire are put to the test.

For Aldo, a fighter of remarkable longevity and success, reaching this point in his career is not surprising. He began his journey when the UFC had little interest in fighters below 155 pounds, eventually rising to the top of the featherweight division and maintaining his dominance for over four years.

Even as he aged, Aldo made the unconventional decision to move down in weight class, a move that defied expectations and showcased his adaptability. Throughout his 42 MMA fights, he transitioned from local favela events to international arenas, always displaying his exceptional skill and determination.

To endure in this unforgiving sport requires more than just talent; it demands a deep-seated passion and drive that sustains a fighter through the toughest challenges. Over time, that fire may dim, leaving a fighter to question their motivations and purpose in the octagon.

Aldo now stands at a crossroads, contemplating his next move. While he has flirted with retirement before, this moment feels different, like a definitive conclusion to a storied career. Whether he chooses to pursue other opportunities or bids farewell to the sport that defined him, Aldo’s legacy is secure, a testament to his unwavering dedication and remarkable achievements.
