Rafael Fiziev has always known that it takes a special kind of crazy to want to step into the octagon with Justin Gaethje, even with a full fight camp. So when the opportunity arose for him to fight Gaethje on short notice at UFC 313, Fiziev didn’t hesitate to seize it.
The original UFC co-main event for this Saturday in Las Vegas was supposed to feature Gaethje against Dan Hooker. However, Hooker had to withdraw from the fight due to a broken hand two weeks before the event. Upon hearing the news, Fiziev immediately started discussing with his manager about stepping in to face Gaethje. Despite hearing that Gaethje’s side initially didn’t want the fight, Fiziev believed it was a miscommunication and went ahead to secure the matchup.
Now, fans will witness Gaethje vs. Fiziev 2, a highly anticipated sequel to their epic battle in March 2023 that earned Fight of the Night honors at UFC 286.
In an interview on Uncrowned’s “The Ariel Helwani Show,” Fiziev expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, calling it a “miracle.” Despite losing their first encounter by majority decision, Fiziev is determined to avenge that loss and prove himself against one of the best in the lightweight division.
After facing setbacks following his loss to Gaethje, including a torn ACL in a fight against Mateusz Gamrot, Fiziev is finally ready to make his return to the octagon. He acknowledges the challenges ahead but is eager to get back to winning ways.
With a clear plan to avoid getting into another war with Gaethje, Fiziev aims to stay smart and utilize his skills to secure victory. Reflecting on his past mistakes, Fiziev is determined to approach this rematch with a strategic mindset and emerge victorious.
