Looking at the UFC events schedule for the first half of 2024, UFC 301 may not stand out as the most exciting fight card. It seems to fall in between the more anticipated events, like a work week between weekends. However, the pay-per-view event in Rio de Janeiro has its own merits, especially with the energy of a Brazilian crowd.

The UFC often caters to the local audience in events like these, featuring many Brazilian fighters and favorable matchups for them. Four out of five fights on the main card have Brazilians as the betting favorites, with Rio legend José Aldo making a return as a slight underdog in the fifth fight.

While the Brazilian crowd may not make it easy for foreign fighters, the event promises some interesting matchups. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect from the pay-per-view portion of UFC 301:

Paul Craig (+450) vs. Caio Borralho (-650)
– Craig, a Scottish submissions expert, faces Borralho, an undefeated Brazilian on the rise.
– Borralho has beaten some good fighters but not any big names yet. Craig could be a test for him.

Michel Pereira (-650) vs. Ihor Potieria (+475)
– Pereira, known for his showmanship, aims to extend his winning streak against Potieria, looking to improve his UFC record.
– Potieria seems like the underdog here, but Pereira needs to win convincingly as a heavy favorite.

Anthony Smith (+400) vs. Vitor Petrino (-550)
– Smith, a former title challenger, faces Petrino, an undefeated Brazilian looking to make a name for himself.
– Smith’s career trajectory could be at stake in this fight, as Petrino aims to continue his unbeaten run.

Jonathan Martinez (-150) vs. José Aldo (+125)
– Martinez, on a winning streak, takes on the legendary Aldo, who is nearing the end of his career.
– Aldo’s focus is on finishing his contract, while Martinez sees an opportunity to add a significant win to his record.

Alexandre Pantoja (-185) vs. Steve Erceg (+150)
– Pantoja, the current flyweight champ, defends his title against Erceg, a rising fighter from Australia.
– Erceg’s quick rise in the division makes this title shot surprising, but a win would catapult him to stardom.

Overall, UFC 301 promises some intriguing matchups and potential upsets, making it a must-watch event for MMA fans.
