UFC 303: Alex Pereira shouldn’t be denied a shot at a historic third UFC title

Alex Pereira’s left hook proved to be the supernatural force that Jiří Procházka should have been worried about heading into the UFC 303 main event. Just like their first meeting last fall, Pereira emerged victorious with a second-round knockout, making it look easy and decisive this time around.

Procházka was methodically picked apart by Pereira in the first round, culminating in a knockdown with a left hook right at the horn. Despite managing to rise and make it to his corner between rounds, Procházka never fully regained his composure. A head kick early in the second round sent him back to the mat, with follow-up punches from Pereira sealing the deal.

Pereira’s dominance in the light heavyweight division has been remarkable, winning titles in two weight classes within four years in the UFC. With talks of a potential move to heavyweight, Pereira’s path to a third UFC title seems promising, although challenges lie ahead.

Current heavyweight champ Jon Jones is sidelined with an injury, while interim champ Tom Aspinall has a fight scheduled, leaving limited options for Pereira at 205 pounds. The only viable opponent appears to be Magomed Ankalaev, a matchup that lacks excitement for many.

Pereira’s rise in the UFC has been meteoric, with the potential for even greater success on the horizon. Denying him the opportunity to pursue further greatness would be a disservice to his undeniable talent and potential.

A few other notes on UFC 303 …

  • Diego Lopes’ flexibility and willingness to fight under various circumstances highlight his dedication to the sport. His readiness to take on different opponents at varying weights demonstrates his true fighting spirit.

  • Mayra Bueno Silva’s disappointment at the referee’s decision showcases the tough nature of combat sports. While it’s never easy to accept a loss, sometimes it’s necessary for the safety and well-being of the fighter.

  • The lackluster performance of Roman Dolidze and Anthony Smith raises questions about the necessity of certain matchups. Sometimes letting go of a fight that lacks stakes and motivation may be the best course of action.

  • Joe Pyfer’s bounce-back win and response to critics emphasize the resilience required in the face of adversity. Overcoming setbacks and continuing to grow is essential for success in the competitive world of MMA.

  • Payton Talbott’s dominant victory as a heavy favorite signals a promising future in the UFC. While facing tougher opponents may be on the horizon, Talbott’s quick finish showcases his potential.

  • Ian Machado Garry’s mixed performance against Michael “Venom” Page suggests room for improvement. Despite his wins in the UFC, Garry’s recent bouts have not been standout moments, leading to questions about his ability to perform against higher-level competition.
