Carlos Ulberg has earned a couple of nicknames over the years. One is “Ladies Night,” stemming from his past as a male stripper before he found a passion for fighting. The other is “Black Jag,” representing his alter ego that transforms him into a formidable force in the ring. However, perhaps a more fitting nickname for Ulberg would be “The Under.”
Ulberg has built a reputation for short, intense fights, with many of his opponents failing to make it past the first round. His upcoming match against Jan Blachowicz at UFC London is no exception, with Vegas odds favoring Blachowicz to extend the fight past two-and-a-half rounds. Despite this, Ulberg remains confident in his abilities, recognizing the strategic approach needed to face a seasoned fighter like Blachowicz.
With a seven-fight win streak and a favorite to win his upcoming match, Ulberg is on the cusp of becoming a serious contender in the light heavyweight division. His training at City Kickboxing alongside notable fighters like Israel Adesanya has prepared him for this moment. Despite the shift in MMA towards kickboxing-based fighters, Ulberg emphasizes the importance of wrestling in his training to counter opponents’ strengths.
As he looks towards a potential title shot in the future, Ulberg remains focused on his current fight and the challenges it presents. With a strong foundation in both kickboxing and wrestling, Ulberg is poised to make a significant impact in the UFC’s light heavyweight division.
When it comes to reaching the top level, I must ensure that I am on par with these individuals.
“I believe it also boils down to the experience that many of these fighters possess. Pereira was once dominant and adored by fans, drawing confidence and support from them. This is crucial at the highest level. When you can draw a crowd and derive confidence from it, it becomes a superpower,” Ulberg reflects.
Ulberg’s confidence is nurtured by those around him, particularly at City Kickboxing with Eugene Bareman, a renowned winner. Surrounded by champions like Izzy and Alexander Volkanovski, the concept of victory feels tangible to him.
“Absolutely,” he affirms. “It serves as a blueprint and gives hope to someone like me. Witnessing success in your peers elevates you. Seeing them excel in training instills a belief that you can achieve the same. It definitely instills hope.”
However, a formidable opponent in the form of Blachowicz awaits him in London.
Ulberg has predicted Blachowicz will aim to take him down, given his striking prowess. Reflecting on Blachowicz’s past bout with Adesanya, Ulberg anticipates a tough challenge but is prepared to face whatever comes his way.
“Blachowicz, at 42 years young, is experienced and has likely used his time off to strategize,” Ulberg observes. “Facing someone like him is inspiring, and I am grateful for the opportunity to co-main an event against him at the O2 Arena in London. He is a formidable opponent, and my goal is to go in there and get the job done.”
