The United States men’s national team has unveiled its squad for two upcoming friendlies in September, featuring a lineup dominated by promising young talents. Scheduled matches include a clash with Canada on Sept. 7 followed by a game against New Zealand on Sept. 10.
This September friendly window marks the team’s return to action since their disappointing Copa América campaign and the subsequent departure of Gregg Berhalter. While Mauricio Pochettino is rumored to be Berhalter’s successor, the official announcement is pending, with Mikey Varas temporarily taking charge as interim coach.
The USMNT continues its trend of youth-focused and Europe-oriented selections, with 13 out of 24 players under 24 years old. Notably, only two players, Tim Ream and Patrick Schulte, ply their trade in MLS clubs. The roster is anchored by seasoned veterans like Christian Pulisic and Tim Ream, who boast over 60 international appearances each.
Two teenage prospects, Caleb Wiley and Diego Kochen, add a youthful spark to the squad, with Kochen earning his first call-up. Marlon Fossey, a 25-year-old defender, also receives his first selection since 2019.
The upcoming friendlies against New Zealand and Canada carry historical significance for the USMNT. While the team has never lost to New Zealand in their three previous encounters, the rivalry with Canada remains intense, with the USMNT prevailing in their last meeting at the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Notable absentees from the roster include Weston McKennie and Tanner Tessman, who are staying back due to a lack of preseason preparation. Antonee Robinson is also omitted to allow for recovery from offseason surgeries, with plans for a return in October.
Looking ahead, the USMNT faces Panama on Oct. 12 in a Gold Cup rematch before a highly anticipated showdown with Mexico on Oct. 15.
