Max Holzer’s recent victory at Oktagon MMA’s main event almost turned into a showdown reminiscent of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor.
The German featherweight rising star secured a significant win at Oktagon 69, submitting Deniz Ilbay with a rear-naked choke in the fourth round. In a moment of celebration, the 23-year-old Holzer concluded his 11th straight win with a kiss on the back of Ilbay’s head, followed by a hip thrust. This action incited a heated reaction from Ilbay, leading to a chaotic scene that quickly went viral.
Holzer revealed on Uncrowned’s “The Ariel Helwani Show” that his actions were partly in jest, but were also fueled by frustrations accumulated over six months of attempts to arrange the fight.
“The issue arose in the fourth round when his corner began verbally attacking me and shouting things in my direction,” Holzer explained. “Even before that, they were saying disrespectful things. I was infuriated because it was a personal feud as well. We had animosity towards each other. So, I did what I did. It’s one thing to make a disrespectful gesture, but it’s another to try to physically assault someone after the fight. That’s unacceptable.”
“What I did wasn’t right either, but they were unaware of the backstory,” Holzer added. “If you understand German, you could hear the insults. What was the reason for that?”
Holzer mentioned that Ilbay was the opponent he had the most personal conflict with in his MMA career, attributing the root of the discord to Ilbay’s false claims and behavior.
“He always belittled me, saying I was too young and seeking attention. He accused me of lying about my dedication to the sport. I was angered by his statements,” Holzer revealed. “He even fabricated stories about me attacking his family, which I would never do. His father would comment on every picture of me, spreading negativity even after I extended a handshake.”
Holzer attempted to apologize to Ilbay during the post-fight press conference, but his gesture was rebuffed. The situation was still tense, escalating to a point where safety concerns arose amidst the post-fight chaos in Dortmund, Germany, prompting security to swiftly intervene.
“I had to be escorted out of the arena by multiple security guards,” Holzer shared. “They informed me that I had to leave the venue and the city, as there were potential threats against me. There were about ten security guards outside the cage and arena.”
“I’m not sure what the deal is with those guys. His father was in his corner, getting into altercations with fans. While I acknowledge that my actions were disrespectful, I couldn’t fathom my team engaging in physical altercations with fans who support us. Fans must always be safe, in my opinion. Such behavior cannot be condoned.”
The situation could have escalated further, considering the fighters’ tumble out of the cage door and down a flight of steps. Holzer mentioned that he believes he is fine, although he is experiencing some back pain, which could be attributed to the fight rather than the post-match commotion.
In the aftermath, security’s swift response was crucial, as Holzer also received threats from Ilbay’s supporters.
“They threatened to physically harm me with a group of people,” Holzer stated. “They blocked my exit and prevented me from receiving medical attention for my cuts and wounds. I was anxious about the situation.”
“Even before the fight, Ilbay claimed he had visited my city twice to confront me. He portrayed himself as a fair sportsman, criticizing me for my jokes and walkouts. However, I believe he has revealed his true nature and is not a fair competitor. While I refrain from casting blame, his actions, along with his father’s, are unbecoming of sportsmanship in my eyes.”
Holzer’s life has largely continued as usual following his victory, except for a surge in social media activity; his Instagram followers doubled overnight due to the incident.
Ilbay marked Holzer’s fifth consecutive win in the Oktagon cage, and Holzer is content with how the promotion has supported him early in his career. If he can contribute to the growth of MMA in Germany while gaining valuable experience, he is fully committed. Ideally, “Stifler” aims to compete in two more fights this year.
Looking ahead, Holzer envisions himself ready for a UFC opportunity after his upcoming fights.
“Every fighter’s aspiration is to compete in the UFC, but I’ll see what opportunities Oktagon presents me,” Holzer expressed. “This year, I am under contract with Oktagon. Next year, we’ll assess the situation.”
“Having trained at American Top Team and Xtreme Couture, I feel prepared to compete in the UFC by the end of this year. I greatly enjoy training in America and aim to extend my stay there this year.”
