Walker Buehler, a right-handed pitcher, has declined an offer to play for the Athletics next season, as they will be playing in a minor-league park in Sacramento. This decision was confirmed by Athletics manager Mark Kotsay during a recent speaking engagement at the USC SBA Sports Business Summit. USC student journalist Kasey Kazliner reported that Buehler expressed no interest in playing in Sacramento.
Despite a challenging season where he posted a 5.38 ERA, Buehler performed well during the postseason, including throwing the title-clinching pitch in Game 5 of the World Series. CBS Sports has ranked him as the 26th-best free agent available, highlighting his potential for a one-year contract worth around $15 million.
Buehler’s reluctance to join the Athletics in their current situation is not surprising. Playing home games at a minor-league stadium like Sutter Health Park may not be appealing to many players, especially those with other options available.
The Athletics are expected to call Sutter Health Park their home until 2027, with ongoing improvements to the ballpark. However, the stadium may not offer the same amenities and atmosphere as major league stadiums.
