Stephen Curry, the star of the Golden State Warriors, was forced to leave their game against the Los Angeles Clippers early on Sunday night due to an ankle injury.
Curry experienced two ankle tweaks in the second half of the game at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Although he briefly left the court, he quickly returned and appeared to be fine. Unfortunately, while setting a screen in the corner, Curry rolled his left ankle severely.
In immediate pain, Curry hopped off the court and limped straight to the locker room.
Shortly after, the Warriors announced that Curry would not return to the game. The extent of his injury is unknown, but he is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his ankle later on Sunday night. Coach Steve Kerr described the injury as “mild or moderate.”
Despite the injury, Curry managed to score 18 points, dish out six assists, and grab four rebounds. He shot 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Before Sunday night’s game, the Warriors had a perfect 2-0 record. They started the season with a dominant 36-point victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, with Curry coming close to a triple-double, and followed it up with a 41-point win against the Utah Jazz on Friday.
The Clippers controlled most of the game on Sunday to secure an eight-point victory. James Harden led the team with 23 points and 11 assists, while Ivica Zubac contributed 23 points and 17 rebounds. Norman Powell also added 20 points. The Clippers now hold a 2-1 record, with their only loss coming in overtime against the Phoenix Suns in their season opener.
Andrew Wiggins led the Warriors with 29 points, and Jonathan Kuminga chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds. Kevon Looney was the only other Warriors player to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
Next, the Warriors are set to face the New Orleans Pelicans in back-to-back games, starting on Tuesday night.
