Baltimore Orioles outfielder Tyler O’Neill hit a home run on his sixth consecutive Opening Day, setting a new record by launching a three-run shot in the third inning against Toronto Blue Jays right-hander José Berríos.
O’Neill, who recently signed a three-year contract with the Orioles, broke his own record from the previous Opening Day. He now holds the record for the most consecutive Opening Day home runs, surpassing Todd Hundley, Gary Carter, and Yogi Berra.
Here’s a glimpse of the historic home run:
“It’s great to kick off the season with a home run, but my focus is not on hitting homers,” O’Neill stated in a recent interview. “I stick to my game plan and approach each at-bat like any other day. Opening Day brings extra excitement with the lineup announcements and national anthem. It’s a fun atmosphere for everyone.”
O’Neill, 29, has a career batting average of .246 with a slugging percentage of .469. He has been a valuable player with 12.8 Wins Above Replacement and has received two Gold Glove Awards. In 2021, he finished eighth in the National League MVP voting while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals.
