How do the EFL playoffs work?
The EFL play-offs are a series of matches held annually to determine the final promotion places in each division of the EFL.
Introduced in 1987, the play-offs involve the four teams finishing below the automatic promotion spots in EFL divisions, competing in play-off matches to secure promotion.
In League One, the team in third faces the sixth-placed team, while the fourth-placed team takes on the fifth-placed team in two-legged semi-finals.
The first leg is played at the lower-ranked team’s home ground, with the second leg hosted by the higher-ranked team.
The winner is determined based on aggregate score, advancing to a one-off game at Wembley Stadium to decide the promotion. Away goals rule does not apply.
Are penalties and extra time used in the playoff final?
If the aggregate score is tied after regular time in the second leg of the semi-finals, extra time and penalties are used to determine the winner.
The final also goes to extra time and penalties if the teams are level.
