The Chicago White Sox are not poised for a significant improvement following their historically dismal 2024 season. However, they are set to make a notable change in one area.
After enduring eight years of criticism and ridicule over the name of their home stadium, Guaranteed Rate Field, the White Sox have announced a new name: Rate Field. This change aligns with the rebranding of naming rights holder Guaranteed Rate to simply Rate, which was announced in July.
The announcement was made through a brief 10-second social media video posted on a Tuesday evening. Interestingly, the stadium’s logo will still feature a large red arrow pointing downwards, retaining a controversial aspect of its previous name.
Originally named Comiskey Park after former White Sox owner Charles Comiskey when it opened in 1991, the stadium underwent name changes to U.S. Cellular Field in 2003 and then Guaranteed Rate Field in 2016. The removal of “Guaranteed” from the name seems fitting given the unpredictable nature of team ownership under Jerry Reinsdorf.
The White Sox are recovering from what could be considered the worst season in MLB history, marked by a record-breaking 41-121 performance. Every aspect of the team struggled, from the league’s lowest-scoring offense to subpar pitching and defense.
Heading into 2025, the team faces further challenges after trading their star pitcher and with a new manager at the helm. Despite these changes, the White Sox are working towards a brighter future in the competitive world of Major League Baseball.
