Team USA’s head coach, Steve Kerr, shook things up with a major lineup change ahead of their Olympic game against South Sudan. Kerr faced criticism for his rotations in the pre-Olympics showcase and the first tournament game, with Joel Embiid struggling in the starting lineup while Anthony Davis excelled, and Jayson Tatum receiving a “DNP — coach’s decision.”
For the game against South Sudan, Kerr decided to start Tatum and Davis, benching Embiid and Jrue Holiday. The decision to bench Embiid was explained by Kerr, who cited South Sudan’s speed as the reason the big man did not play.
However, Kerr assured that Embiid would be back in the starting lineup for the next game against Puerto Rico, alongside Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Devin Booker, and Jrue Holiday. Navigating rotations with a roster of 12 star players is a challenge, as someone has to sit out in each game.
Embiid, who struggled in his U.S. men’s national team debut, has found it challenging to adjust to a different role surrounded by elite players. His post-up game has slowed down the offense, while more mobile bigs like Davis and Bam Adebayo have been more effective on defense.
Despite his limited playing time, Embiid remains positive about his experience with Team USA, acknowledging the need to adapt to a new dynamic. His performance in the exhibition showcase was modest, and he received a “DNP — coach’s decision” in the second tournament game after a lackluster showing in the first game.
