Wolves are set to file a formal complaint with UEFA following allegations of racial abuse made by South Korea striker Hee Chan Hwang during a friendly match against Italian side Como on Monday.
The incident took place during the second half of the game held at Wolves’ pre-season training base in Marbella, resulting in Hwang’s teammate Daniel Podence being sent off in the ensuing altercation.
Head coach Gary O’Neil spoke with Hwang and offered him the option to halt the game, but the player chose to continue playing.
O’Neil stated on the club’s official website: “Channy was subjected to a racist comment, which is deeply disappointing. I spoke with Channy to discuss if he wanted to abandon the match or come off the field himself, but he was determined for the team to proceed with their training. It’s truly disheartening that such incidents occur, impacting the game in a negative way. This should not be tolerated.”
“He is understandably upset by the incident. I commend his decision to prioritize the team’s well-being during a challenging moment. Despite experiencing something so offensive, he still wanted the team to continue training and gaining experience during the pre-season trip. Channy will receive our full support, and we will ensure he is okay.”

“We are a united group. While there are appropriate ways to address such situations without compromising our performance on the field, we remain a cohesive team. Despite this unfortunate incident, we have had a productive week of training and some positive moments in the game. However, we must now address and discuss this regrettable incident, which has overshadowed the match when ideally, we would be focusing on the game itself.”
Wolves emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over the Serie A newcomers, with full-back Matt Doherty scoring the lone goal shortly after the hour mark from Rayat Ait-Nouri’s free-kick.
