The New York Yankees have taken action against fans who interfered with Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts during Game 4 of the World Series. Austin Capobianco and John Peter have been banned from attending Game 5 at Yankee Stadium as a result of their unacceptable physical contact with Betts.
In a statement, the Yankees emphasized the importance of player, fan, and staff safety at Yankee Stadium, stating that such behavior cannot be tolerated. The team and Major League Baseball maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards such actions, ensuring that these fans will not be permitted to attend any capacity at tonight’s game.
MLB had also requested the Yankees to ban the fans from Game 5, showing a united front in prioritizing player safety. Tony Clark, executive director of the MLB Players Association, released a statement echoing the importance of player safety at ballparks and expressing vigilance in tracking and responding to such incidents.
The incident occurred in the first inning of the Yankees’ 11-4 victory, where Betts was interfered with while attempting to catch a fly ball in foul territory. The fans were immediately ejected for their actions, and following the game, they initially believed they would be allowed to return for Game 5. However, after the ban was announced, Capobianco revealed that they were warned of potential arrest if they attempted to enter the stadium.
As the Yankees aim to extend the series with a win in Game 5, the focus remains on ensuring a safe and respectful environment for players and fans alike. The series may shift back to Los Angeles for Games 6 and 7 if necessary.
