The New York Yankees are reportedly considering a reunion with starting pitcher Jameson Taillon as the MLB trade deadline approaches. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports, the Yankees have engaged in talks with the Chicago Cubs regarding a potential deal involving Taillon.
While the Cubs are on the verge of contention with a 47-53 record, just 4.5 games out of a wild-card spot in the National League, they are facing a pivotal decision on whether to buy or sell at the deadline.
Taillon has been enjoying a resurgence this season, posting a 7-4 record in 16 starts with a 3.10 ERA, 75 strikeouts, 18 walks, and a 1.16 WHIP over 93 innings pitched.
Although the Yankees may not have a pressing need for pitching, adding Taillon could provide valuable depth to their rotation. With ace Gerrit Cole leading the way and Luis Gil’s status uncertain due to an innings limit, Taillon could offer stability in the middle of the rotation.
During his previous tenure with the Yankees from 2021-2022, Taillon displayed flashes of potential but also struggled with inconsistency. In 2022, he put up solid numbers with a 14-5 record, 3.91 ERA, and a 2.3 fWAR.
Acquiring Taillon, who is under contract for the next two seasons at $18 million per year, could be a cost-effective move for the Yankees to bolster their pitching staff.
While the Yankees may not have to part with significant assets to bring Taillon back, the potential reunion remains a storyline worth monitoring as the trade deadline approaches.
