New York Yankees iconic broadcaster John Sterling has embraced retirement, but there are rumors that he may make a special appearance during the postseason.
According to a report by Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, Sterling is contemplating a comeback to announce games during the postseason.
Sterling made the announcement of his retirement earlier this year in April, citing the demanding travel schedule as the primary reason for his somewhat unexpected decision after a remarkable 36-year career.
Marchand also mentioned that “initial discussions suggest that he would be required to commit to calling all home and away playoff games.”
Following Sterling’s departure from the broadcast booth earlier this season, the Yankees have utilized a mix of Rickie Ricardo, Justin Shackil, and Emmanuel Berbari to cover games alongside Suzyn Waldman.
If Sterling does come back for the postseason, he will resume his retirement afterward, as per Marchand’s report.
The Yankees are set to launch a nationwide search for a replacement for Sterling, with the current trio of announcers also being considered for the role.
