New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman provided an update on Luis Gil’s injury status, revealing that the AL Rookie of the Year will be sidelined for at least three months due to a high-grade lat strain. Gil, who was recently shut down from throwing for six weeks pending MRI results, will aim to return “sometime in the summer,” according to Cashman.
The news came as a blow to Gil, who expressed his disappointment through interpreter Marlon Abreu, saying, “It’s definitely not the best feeling when they tell you something like that. You’re not waiting for news like that. It’s a tough moment right there to digest. You’ve got to start thinking of how to move forward, whatever the journey might be.”
Notably, Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt faced a similar injury last season, landing on the injured list in late May and making a comeback on Sept. 7.
With the Yankees set to kick off their season on March 27 against the Milwaukee Brewers, Gil’s absence will create a gap in the rotation alongside Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, and Carlos Rodón. This setback could potentially provide opportunities for Marcus Stroman, Carlos Carrasco, Will Warren, and Allan Winans to step up and showcase their skills.
Despite the setback, Cashman remains optimistic about the team’s depth, acknowledging that injuries are an inevitable part of the game. The Yankees will need to adapt and rely on their roster depth to navigate through Gil’s absence.
