Yankees sign Paul Goldschmidt: Why New York is betting on former MVP rebounding from career-worst year

The New York Yankees and free-agent first baseman Paul Goldschmidt have reached an agreement on a one-year contract worth $12.5 million. Goldschmidt, the 2022 National League’s Most Valuable Player Award winner, will join the Yankees lineup as they look for improved production at first base compared to last season, where they relied on players like Anthony Rizzo and Ben Rice.

Despite coming off a career-worst season in 2024, where he hit .245/.302/.414 with 22 home runs, Goldschmidt still shows promise. His strong underlying metrics, such as a 91.2 mph average exit velocity and a 49.6% hard-hit percentage, indicate that he can still make solid contact with the ball.

Yankee Stadium’s reputation as a hitter-friendly park, especially for right-handed batters, could also benefit Goldschmidt’s power hitting abilities. The stadium ranks third in home run factor for righties over the last three seasons, potentially boosting Goldschmidt’s performance.

Power remains

Although Goldschmidt’s home run total in 2024 was lower than usual, his ability to hit the ball hard remains intact. His exit velocity and hard-hit percentage rank well compared to other players, suggesting he can still provide power at the plate.

Stronger finish

Despite a slow start to the 2024 season, Goldschmidt improved his numbers in the second half, hitting .271/.319/.480 with a lower strikeout rate. While his underlying metrics didn’t fully support this improvement, the Yankees are banking on his late-season performance to continue into the upcoming season.

The alternatives

The Yankees’ decision to sign Goldschmidt reflects not only their confidence in his ability to bounce back but also the lack of appealing first-base options in the market. With other players like Christian Walker signing lucrative deals, Goldschmidt emerged as a more attractive choice despite his struggles in 2024.

Overall, the Yankees believe that Goldschmidt’s track record of success and potential for improvement outweigh the risks associated with his recent performance. With his power-hitting abilities and the favorable conditions at Yankee Stadium, Goldschmidt has the opportunity to make a significant impact for the team in the upcoming season.
