They say never meet your heroes, but Cecilio Waterman just couldn’t help himself Thursday during Panama’s Nations League semifinal against the U.S. men’s national team at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
A challenging game turned into a memorable moment for Waterman as he not only met his childhood idol, Thierry Henry, but also celebrated his crucial goal with the former soccer star.

“You’re my idol! You’re my idol!” Waterman exclaimed to Henry in Spanish. Later, during the post-match show, Waterman shared his admiration for Henry and the surreal experience of meeting him.
“Last night, they asked me who my childhood idol was, and I said Thierry Henry… I scored, saw you, and knew I had to come say hi.”

“Last night, at the team hotel, I was asked ‘who is your idol?’ and I said ‘it’s always been Thierry Henry.’ I watched him play at Arsenal, and the truth is, ever since I was a young kid he will be an inspiration for me. Since I was a boy. I scored the goal, I saw you and I knew I had to come and say hi.”
Henry expressed his surprise and happiness at being part of the celebration, even though he wasn’t the one scoring the goal. He appreciated the special moment and the admiration shown by Waterman.
Waterman’s goal secured Panama’s victory as the U.S. team failed to equalize in the closing minutes.
Panama will now advance to the final where they will face the winner of the Mexico vs. Canada match. Waterman will have the opportunity to lead Panama to their first Nations League trophy, creating another memorable moment in his career, although it may not surpass the unforgettable meeting with his idol, Thierry Henry.
