Zion Williamson’s apparent weight loss draws attention on social media

NBA fans may witness a transformed Zion Williamson on the court in the upcoming season, potentially a leaner version based on images shared on social media over the weekend. The New Orleans Pelicans star was captured interacting with children at his basketball camp in Spartanburg, South Carolina, appearing noticeably slimmer compared to previous sightings. Concerns regarding Williamson’s weight and potential impact on his performance have been raised, especially after criticism from basketball analysts like Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

Reportedly, Williamson has shed over 25 pounds since facing public scrutiny, aiming to reach 272 pounds by the start of the NBA regular season, down from his Duke University weight of 285 pounds. This significant transformation follows a challenging period of injury setbacks, including missing an entire season due to a foot injury in 2021-22. Despite lower scoring and rebounding statistics, Williamson managed to play a career-high 70 games last season, showcasing improved health and fitness levels.

Reflecting on his journey, Williamson acknowledged the impact of external criticism on his performance, admitting accountability for his physical condition. The upcoming 2024-25 NBA season holds promise for the Pelicans as they prepare to face the Chicago Bulls in their opening game on October 23. Training camp commences at Belmont University in Nashville on October 1, setting the stage for Williamson’s continued evolution and growth on the court.
