Carlos Ulberg secured the biggest victory of his UFC career, although it may not have been enough to guarantee him a shot at the elusive title.
Ulberg narrowly defeated former UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz in a lackluster three-round decision at UFC London’s co-main event at The O2 Arena in London. The judges scored the fight 29-28 in favor of Ulberg, extending his impressive win streak to eight consecutive wins in the division.
Following his win, Ulberg expressed his desire to challenge the new UFC champion, Magomed Ankalaev.
“Jan is a seasoned veteran, and you have to approach a fighter like him with caution,” Ulberg commented post-fight. “He may be nearing the end of his career, but he showed up to make a statement tonight, so it was a good experience to face him in the Octagon.”
“Having the longest win streak in the light heavyweight division, the only thing left for me is a shot at the title,” Ulberg added.
Ulberg (12-1) managed to outstrike Blachowicz (29-11-1) in a fight characterized by low volume, with neither fighter displaying the same level of intensity seen in their previous bouts. Blachowicz, aged 42, targeted Ulberg’s lead leg in the opening round, while Ulberg, 34, responded with his own attacks in the second round.
With the score tied at 19-19 going into the final round, Ulberg and Blachowicz failed to elevate their performance, allowing Ulberg to clinch the victory with a 31-25 lead in significant strikes in the final round and a 75-59 advantage overall.
Blachowicz’s record now stands at 1-3-1 in his last five fights since his career-defining win over Israel Adesanya to defend the UFC light heavyweight title in 2021.
