New Sacramento Kings general manager Scott Perry has discussed the head coaching position with Doug Christie but intends to explore other candidates as well.

Perry expressed his admiration for Christie’s playing career and his ability to connect with players on the court during his introductory press conference. He mentioned having conversations with Christie and other potential candidates, with a decision expected within the next week.

Christie served as the interim coach for the Kings after Mike Brown’s departure in December. The team finished with a 40-42 record under Christie’s leadership and expressed his desire to continue in the role.

Perry emphasized the qualities he is looking for in a coach, including a focus on defense, teamwork, discipline, professionalism, and accountability. He also mentioned meeting with every member of the basketball operations department to determine the best fit for the organization moving forward.

The Kings have struggled to find sustained success since the departure of coach Rick Adelman in 2006. Perry aims to build a sustainable future for the team with a shared vision with owner Vivek Ranadivé.

Perry acknowledged the team’s defensive shortcomings and the need for roster improvements, emphasizing accountability and teamwork as key elements for future success. He also hinted at potential changes to enhance the team’s competitiveness.

As Perry works towards improving the team, he stressed the importance of self-reflection and accountability for players and staff alike. He highlighted the need for individual and collective efforts to achieve success on the court.

Perry also addressed the need for improvement from high-paid players like Zach LaVine, emphasizing the importance of impacting winning beyond individual performances.

On Wednesday, when asked about this, Perry stated that he is not concerned about his words coming back to haunt him. He mentioned that he has known LaVine since scouting him as a draft prospect and recently had a positive conversation with him.

Perry emphasized that his current role is to surround LaVine with the right pieces to help him start winning. He clarified that his previous comments were not personal but rather a reflection of LaVine’s lack of winning experience. Perry expressed his commitment to supporting LaVine and enhancing his abilities on the court.
