The Los Angeles Lakers have made strategic moves to bolster their coaching staff for the upcoming season. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the team has added Scott Brooks and Nate McMillan as assistant coaches. Both Brooks and McMillan bring a wealth of experience as former NBA head coaches.
Brooks recently assisted Chauncey Billups in his transition to head coach with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2021. Prior to his time in Portland, Brooks led the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2008 to 2015 and the Washington Wizards from 2016 to 2021.
On the other hand, McMillan most recently served as the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks from 2020 to 2023. Before that, he had coaching stints with the Indiana Pacers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Seattle SuperSonics. McMillan’s vast experience as an assistant coach and head coach will be invaluable to the Lakers.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka emphasized the importance of surrounding head coach JJ Redick with experienced mentors. “Leaning into experience with the front-of-the-bench coaches is crucial in setting JJ up for success,” Pelinka stated during Redick’s introductory press conference.
Despite initial speculations, Dwane Casey from the Detroit Pistons’ front office declined a coaching role with the Lakers. However, other potential candidates linked to Los Angeles include Jared Dudley, currently an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks, and Rajon Rondo, a former Lakers player.
