Following an illustrious 13-year stint in the Bay Area, Klay Thompson is set to embark on a new chapter with the Dallas Mavericks, complete with a new jersey number.
The veteran Warriors star signed a three-year, $50 million deal with the Mavericks in a sign-and-trade agreement, marking the end of an era with Golden State.
During his time with the Warriors, Thompson was a dominant force, earning five All-Star selections, two All-NBA nods, and four NBA championship rings.
Despite his success in No. 11 with the Warriors, Thompson will don a different number in Dallas due to Kyrie Irving already holding the No. 11 jersey.
Why is Klay Thompson switching jersey numbers?
Thompson will wear No. 31 with the Mavericks, a number he chose in honor of Jason Terry, who won a championship with the Mavericks while wearing that number.
Thompson also mentioned his desire to surpass Reggie Miller on the all-time 3-point list while wearing No. 31 as a tribute to the former player.
Throughout his career, Thompson has worn No. 1 during his high school and college days, earning accolades and having his jersey retired at Washington State.
Klay Thompson’s jersey number history
Thompson has predominantly worn No. 11 during his NBA career but sported No. 1 in high school and college.
