Clyde Drexler’s 1992 Olympic gold medal being auctioned off; Bidding begins at $250,000

An Olympic gold medal from basketball legend Clyde Drexler has recently been put up for auction. This marks the first time a player’s medal from the 1992 Olympics has been auctioned, and it is expected to fetch a substantial amount. The bidding started at $250,000, but experts anticipate it will sell for much more. Notably, in 2023, a duplicate gold medal from “Dream Team” member Karl Malone sold for over $74,000.

Drexler’s gold medal comes with a letter of authenticity signed in April, adding to its value and historical significance.

During the 1992 Olympics, Drexler, who was playing for the Portland Trail Blazers at the time, was not initially part of the 10-player roster. However, he and Christian Laettner were selected as the final two members by the USA Basketball selection committee. Drexler’s performance during the Olympics included averaging 10.5 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.0 rebounds, ultimately contributing to Team USA’s victory over Croatia in the gold medal game.

In recent years, several memorabilia items from the 1992 Olympics have been sold, including a game-worn, signed Michael Jordan jersey that fetched over $3 million at auction. Laettner has also sold multiple items from the iconic Summer Games.
