What were the owners’ concerns?
Some franchise owners, like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders, expressed concerns about the mega auction. They believed that being limited to retaining only four players would hinder their progress since the last auction in 2022. They argued that frequent mega auctions lead to teams relying on short-term solutions rather than building a solid team.
What are the retention changes?
In response to these concerns, the BCCI has decided to increase the number of retained players from four to six. This adjustment aims to help teams create more stable rosters.

Moreover, there is a possibility of reintroducing the Right to Match (RTM) option. This would enable teams to retain players through a combination of RTMs and direct retentions, offering flexibility in team-building strategies.
The RTM option was last utilized in 2018. If reinstated, teams could potentially adopt a system where they retain a mix of players through direct retention and RTM, such as a 4+2 or 3+3 combination for player retention.
With the increased retention numbers and the potential return of RTM, teams will have more flexibility in maintaining their core players.
