The New England Patriots are juggling two quarterbacks in the early stages of the 2024 NFL season. Starter Jacoby Brissett is being prepared for the challenges ahead, while third overall draft pick Drake Maye is being developed behind the scenes.
Head coach Jerod Mayo has outlined various strategies to ensure Maye’s development without compromising Brissett’s competitive situation. One approach is to give Maye a significant share of first-team reps during practice sessions.
Evan Washburn of CBS Sports reports that Maye is getting 30% of the first-team reps, alongside Brissett, to simulate live game situations and aid in his development.
Washburn explained, “Jacoby’s the starter, but Drake Maye gets a substantial share of first-team reps during the week, which is uncommon for a backup quarterback in the NFL.”
Maye also faces a challenging task as a scout-team passer, going against the Patriots’ top offense without prior knowledge of the plays, providing him with valuable experience against a strong defense.
Mayo emphasized the importance of show-team reps in Maye’s development, along with virtual reality training, extra practice hours, and special assignments to accelerate his progress.
While the Patriots are focused on Maye’s long-term development, they are also backing Brissett as the current QB1, aiming to balance both objectives effectively.
Washburn noted, “The Patriots are creating an environment for Drake Maye to improve during practice sessions, while acknowledging that Jacoby Brissett is the preferred option for winning games at present.”
