CAMDEN, N.J. — The usually composed Daryl Morey found himself in a moment of vulnerability, his usual demeanor giving way to raw emotion as he received the heartbreaking news during his media day appearance. The 76ers president was pulled away by team personnel after it was announced that Dikembe Mutombo had passed away following a battle with brain cancer.

Upon his return, Morey’s demeanor had shifted, his smile replaced by red eyes and a shaken voice. He shared a personal tribute to the Hall of Fame center, highlighting Mutombo’s impact both on and off the court.

Morey reminisced about their time together in Houston and acknowledged Mutombo’s significant contributions to the Sixers franchise. Mutombo’s arrival in Philadelphia in 2001 marked a turning point for the team, propelling them to an unlikely NBA Finals appearance that season.

76ers star Joel Embiid expressed his admiration for Mutombo, calling him a role model and emphasizing his positive influence, particularly within the African community.

Embiid, who has drawn inspiration from Mutombo’s legacy, continues to strive for greatness on the court, seeking to achieve a similar impact and success.

As the 76ers navigate through the challenges of the current season, the memory of Mutombo serves as a reminder of the team’s rich history and the potential for future success.

With new additions to the roster, including Paul George, the 76ers are poised for a competitive season ahead. George’s versatile skill set and experience bring a valuable asset to the team, complementing Embiid’s dominant presence on the court.

As the 76ers honor the legacy of Mutombo and strive for championship glory, the spirit of resilience and determination instilled by the late Hall of Famer continues to inspire the team towards greatness.
