The San Diego Padres have officially extended manager Mike Shildt’s contract for two more years, the team announced today. Shildt, whose current contract was set to expire in 2025, will now be with the team until the end of the 2027 season.
“Mike has shown his dedication to winning and has a unique set of skills that have led our team to great success,” said general manager A.J. Preller. “His passion for the game and for the Padres organization is evident, and I am excited to continue working with Mike to bring a championship to San Diego.”
Shildt, 56, just completed his first season as the Padres’ manager, guiding the team to a 93-69 record, with an impressive 56-29 run after June 18. The Padres swept the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card Series before falling to the Dodgers in the NLDS.
Looking ahead to the next season, the Padres will be missing Joe Musgrove due to Tommy John surgery and Jurickson Profar as a free agent. However, key players such as Dylan Cease, Michael King, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Manny Machado are set to return. The bullpen, led by Jason Adam and Robert Suarez, is also a strong asset for the team.
Prior to joining the Padres, Shildt spent 17 years with the St. Louis Cardinals, working his way up from a scout to a major league manager. During his time with the Cardinals, he led the team to the postseason three times and was named NL Manager of the Year in 2019. Shildt’s overall managerial record stands at 345-268 (.563).
