In a disappointing 21 to 16 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears made history by breaking the franchise record for most passing yards by a rookie with 363 yards. This record was previously held by Mitch Trubisky.
During the game, Williams completed 33 of 52 passes for 363 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 80.8.
Trubisky’s record was set on December 16, 2017, in Detroit when he completed 31 of 46 passes for 314 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions, and a passer rating of 66.8.
Additionally, Williams threw his first career touchdown pass to fellow rookie Rome Odunze, marking Odunze’s first touchdown reception as well.
Odunze shared that Williams advised him to keep the milestone football.
Both Caleb and Rome are expected to achieve more milestones in the future, hopefully alongside victories for the Chicago Bears.
Reflecting on the loss, Williams expressed his disappointment but also pride in his team during the post-game press conference.
He believes that the offense is close to establishing its identity and commended the defense for their exceptional performance.
While the loss was filled with errors and challenges, Williams remains optimistic about the progress of the offense and the developing connection between him and Rome.
Caleb Williams’ 363 passing yards rank as the 11th most in a game in Bears history, 8th since the AFL-NFL merger. This achievement marks the highest passing yards in nearly a decade, following Brian Hoyer’s 397 yards in 2016.
